My boat has old name on transom. It is not a sticker, any ideas on how best to remove. Some strippers might attack the surface?

If the transom is still fiberglass and has not been painted, use the safe strip sold at West Marine, it comes in a spray bottle and it works really good. Spray it on and just wait, it take a while to start working, but it works. Once the painted name is off, you'll still see the name in the form a what looks like a stain, use lacquer thinner on a rag and wipe id down, you'll get most all of it off, I compounded and buff mine after I removed the names from the Trojan and our new Silverton

Don't forget to perform the name changing ceremony!

There is an old seaman's trick

Easy Off Oven Cleaner - it has to be the aerosol can. Works like magic and does not damage the gel coat.

I have used it many times with great success.

so all you do is wash the transom, then use easyoff right on the fiberglass? will this get rid of any shadows from the previous name? i've never heard of using oven cleaner. will this work for the pinstriping along my cabin sides too after i use a rubber wheel to get rid of it?

You will still see a hint of the previous name as the gel coat under the paint is newer as it was protected. But like you have to be standing on the ground with your face close to the transom to see it!!!

Easy Off was recommended in the March issue of Boating magazine which I just read over the weekend.

Oven cleaner or any other harsh products will strip off any wax that is protecting the gelcoat. The cleaner works but you should wax the transom afterwards.

I would think a proper compound (buffing/polish) would take the stains out if all else fails.

Don't forget to wax the transom AFTER you put the new name on
