wire shelves for closet????

Post by yorklyn »

Has anyone ever used the "closet maid" white wire shelves on their boat? I'm doing away with the clothes bar in the stateroom . I was thinking of using these wire shelves to allow for better ventilation in the closet with the clothes. Am concerned about rust. I was planning on using touch up paint on the shelf ends after I cut them. I was thinking the wire ones would be better than having clothes sitting on wood shelves. There is a ton of space in this closet that was unused with just the clothes bar. the closet is really deep.
What do you guys think?

Hmmm, that's actually a good idea. I hang some stuff in there but only because the pole is installed. I think those would hold up fine, they're vinyl coated so only the metal ends would be exposed. If you paint those I think you'd be set.

Interested to see what you do, there is a lot of dead space that can be used.

I used them -- mounted them with 1/4" Adel clamps because I didn't like the factory option. Good for all of the reasons that you say.

You can also get the shelves with the integral bar on the bottom. That way you could revert to a hanging locker if need be. The lower shelves could be hinged along the back, simply supported along the sides, and tip up and out of the way for hanging storage when you need it.
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

No problem with rust? I like the idea of hinging the lower ones, thanks

You could dip the cut ends in material that is used for coating tool handles such as plasti dip:

ergo rust eliminated.

That's a great idea Larry! Plastic dip would definitely seal the ends up. Thanks!

That's a great idea! I hardly use that locker at all. They make a kit to cover the ends of the shelf, but I like the dipping and hinging ideas.

I guess I am the only one who likes and uses the clothes hanger bar, lol

In the summer months I could spend a week on my boat without going back to my apartment in Brooklyn, I have to wear suit N tie for work, so I need that rod, its a life saver.

A previous owner installed some drawers on the bottom.

Everything is dirty and messy right now, sorry.

On the opposite side of the stateroom the closet is smaller with some small built-in shelves which basically are a waste.

I like the idea of the wire shelves that would be full depth.

This is the closet in the side stateroom, it has a rod in it but the closet is just used for storage. There is just never enough space on boats to keep all yer stuff.

The cushions are the inserts for the dinette when it converts to a bed, they are big and bulky, nowhere else to put them.

Turned out pretty good. top shelf is about 35 inches deep. second shelf is 20inches. decided to leave the bottom open to store larger things.

That came out awesome!

The wood strip across the front gives it a nice classy finishing touch.

I will definitely do this to the smaller closet in the forward stateroom on mine.

Keep up the great work, your boat gives everyone motivation!

Thanks Doug,
If you do it get the 20 inch wide pantry shelving, the wires are closer together. I used pvc trim board from home depot for the pin rails (1-1/2 wide i think) ( didnt feel like ripping down wood and painting!) the wood trim piece is part of the system, bought it and clips to attach it at home depot too. I thought the wood would stick up a bit to keep stuff from sliding off, they actually ended up being flush.
