Upper throttle controls shot? 1976 F-32.

My upper throttle controls have a lot of play it them and they feel sloppy. They don't, "reliably" back the engines down to idle. The lower controls work perfectly. Is this an adjustment or is the throttle control worn out? Is there a rebuild kit available? Thanks.

You never know until you really look at it. But 95% probability says it's the cable. Cables, especially cheaper ones, stretch a little with use over the years and you either replace them or just adjust them at the connections. I don't know anything but was able to adjust mine at the tranny...seems easier on that end. It had a little connector that allowed a little adjustment either way.

Better fix it before you accidentally back into Biff's new Hatteras.

Could be as Tony describes. Also if they are the Teleflex/Morse levers, you may want to pop off the covers, two lil' screws on each side and inspect. The slop may be found in the pivots, etc.

You should be able to adjust the cable a bit to take out some slop.

Mine have the side to side slop and although the forward /reverse is okay and snug, I'll be looking for replacements in the future.

Throttle housings

Anyone know where you can get new housings for the throttles. Mine on the lower helm of my F-32 have cracks in them and need to be replaced but the controls work fine.

I called John at MT and he said they were no longer available. I'm gonna buy some nice Morse heavy duty controls....when I have more $$$$ ;-)

Willie, when you have time, will you please tell me the model numbers of the controls you purchased?

Thanks!

I have a set of Morse Controls (separate throttles with twin trans) with cables that I would be willing to sell cheap if anyone wants to tinker. They're old but appear to be in good condition. They came off of a Greenwich cruiser.

The model that I used are Twin SR series, but I don't know if Teleflex/Morse still makes them or not. Here is their web site http://www.teleflexmarine.com

Thanks for the links guys. Willie, I am going to replace with the beefier Morse/Teleflex controls.

Safari- if what you have looks like Willie's photo, can you let me know? Better yet if you can post a pic of them.

Thanks!

"old boat"?

I have nice shiny covers on my flybridge controls and they were free. One of my neighbors is kind of a jerk. He has a new 40' Riviera (that's not as long or wide as my F-36) for which he paid $875k. Anyway, at a party last year he referred to my boat as "old."

So, after the party I climbed onto the bridge of his boat and swapped the covers for his controls with mine. My old ones were as pitted as nasty as they can get. Now, mine are nice and shiny - see:

We both had a good laugh when he finally realized what I had done at New Years - at least 7 months after I did the switcharoo. Boating is supposed to be fun. I know I'm having a blast!

I have a set of Morse controls from a Greenwich - pretty good shape w good cables. Slight pitting - should clean up fine.

more of same.....

Some Chris Craft controls (Morse - notice chris craft logo) look a little rough, but very good mechanicals - with cables.
