I would say that's unlikely. I replaced both of the senders (one failed) at the same time and the floats themselves were physically ok. Be careful running without anti-siphon valves (for obvious reasons).

My understanding is that the paralleling solenoid is only engaged for starting.

agreed, I wouldn't fill the hole only to re-drill it larger. That's a lot of work. I would use a piece of thin piece of plywood and screw it on the inside of the boat and use that to redrill new hole.
