SeaWolf Windlass 520

Post by tcollins2 »

Winter project, get the windlass operational. SeaWolf 520 on the 12 Meter International. Gravity drop, power up version. No clutch handle included with the sale when I bought the boat in August. Anyone have one they could send me the dimensions on the handle and what it's made of. I can probably make my own.

I've sent this website emails but I have not gotten a response.

http://www.slspares.co.uk/parts.php?pro ... 0+Windlass+

Part is called the "clutch operating lever 6052047" but I can only find it across the pond on this website.

Secondly, I have no power to the unit. There is a small switch in the electrical panel for "windlass" and that is "on", but still now power. I'm thinking there must be other wiring somewhere or a relay since Trojan probably did not run the large gauge wires into that panel controlled by a tiny switch. All my battery switches are in the on position and still no power at the windlass or foot switch. Any thoughts?

The switch ought to control power to the relay, which is likely near the windlass, so that a bad up/down switch cannot accidentally cause the windlass to operate. You ought to also have a largish breaker somewhere. Check out the manual listed in post #6:

I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Hi,
Thanks for sending that link to the wiring diagram. My 12 Meter has slightly different wiring. They bring a third small switching wire along with the larger guage wires from the battery. Note in my pic that the relay is not there. The only way this will work is if the relay is located somewhere else in the boat and the third wire comes from the foot switch to pull in that relay. Does anyone know where they locate the relay? I don't want to pull the boat apart to find it if someone actually knows where Trojan put it.
Thanks, Tom

Hi,
I found what the solenoid looks like. Does this picture jar anyone's memory if they have seen this around their International boat?

My 12m has a Lewmar, but the setup in the anchor locker should be similar. I haven't run mine yet, so I may be replacing the solenoid and adding wireless anyway.

That relay is for the two way windlass - power up and power down. Mine is smaller, gravity drop and power up.
It makes sense to have the relay in the locker with the rest of the connections, but not my version.
I'm going to have to start taking things apart to trace the wires to find the solenoid.
Thanks, Tom

Found it! Well thanks to some electrical drawings Bob sent me I found the solenoid. Hiding in plain sight. It's behind the starboard motor next to the battery charger. Need to get behind the motor and look forward to read it. The solenoid looks like the average run of the mill solenoid, not what I had seen from other website data. I have no power to it. So I think I have a bad switch in the panel. I didn't have my tester with me, so the investigation continues. You can make out the word windlass written on the wire.

I just wanted to follow up on this last project.

Well after I found the relay, I jumped it and the windlass starting working.
I took the foot switch off the deck and jumped that and the windlass started working too.
So after all this, it is just a bad foot switch at the bow.
Now I just need to find a replacement.
No caulk around the foot switch so the inside of the pulpit was damp. Let it dry out for a few days.

One last thing. I'm missing the actual lever that goes into the clutch to release the chain so a large screwdriver worked.
There is no safety chain on my setup. Anyone have a safety set up to share? If that clutch becomes loose the anchor can free fall while underway.

I would try to contact the manufacturer in order to purchase the correct lever. I did so this spring. Maxwell windless in my case. The proper lever solved my issues. If I had continued to try and jury-rig a lever I'm sure that I would have damaged the teeth. Best of luck. Rick

I had no luck with the UK contact getting back to me after several tries so I made my own.
Home Depot stock aluminum, modified to fit and then dipped in rubber to coat the handle.
It works.

I made my own handle just out of stock aluminum. (one piece). If I can remember I will measure the thing tonight, and post measurements here.

We use a Mantus Chain Hook to "prevent accidental discharge" of the anchor.
