Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
Hi All,
Barrie has been kind enough to offer up his velvet drives for me to utilize.
there is a ratio difference, I'm wondering your thoughts if I go from 1:91:1 to 1:52:1
My existing velvet drives are: 10-17-008
Barrie's drives are: AS12-72C (10-18)
can I swap both? would I need to change my props? If so, I may have access to two 17x16
or will the rear portion fit from mine onto this one?

1.91 is two to one.
Also it opposites input out put.
If you put the 1 1/2 to one as a replacement you will have both props turning the same way.
Would be a problem.

Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
Thank you Bob.
Would that require opposing props?
If I could use these would be great. Would the pressure plate be interchangeable?

I have to disagree with Bob , you would still have opposing props . But you would have to put the right hand on the left and the left on the right . Of course you would need smaller wheels . Small wheels don't always do the good on big boats
I am assuming you would be swaping both , If just one then I have to agree with Bob

Would it not be more economical to just get the right trans.

Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
I got these two drives for free and will be putting them in along with my uncle. So if its possible and will work if I change props, I'm thinking it might be a good option to go.BeaconMarineBob wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 8:58 pm Would it not be more economical to just get the right trans.
with that said, based on vicprop calculator props at 16x12 (4 blade) 17x12 (3 Blade) would work. Would that be too small of a prop for this boat? I have felt its over propped currently, so was thinking of changing props anyway.
All of your input and knowledge is much appreciated and so very helpful.
Cheers,

It would work . But I would think repairing or replacing your trans with the same ratio would be cheaper then buying 2 props . and easier then pulling 2 trans .

Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
Definitely good and valid points.
Hopefully I could find a repair place that can fix it in a reasonable time.
Thank you all for your input and advice.

Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
You should be able to have it rebuilt for under $1000
Rebuild kit is $195.00 and if needed reverse plates are $134.30 ( 3 bronze and two steel)
A new set of props will be far more then $1000.00

It was nice meeting you Tdogg and mrs Tdogg and little dogg
Whether the transmissions help you out or not, I'm glad you have them
I've moved then a couple times and wasn't eager to do it again
Good luck

I pulled one in my F32 in about an hour, cost $1,000 for a rebuild easy enough to put back in, myself and a friend lifted it with a rope around one end, just lugged it around and threw in the pickup truck
Re: Drive advice needed - Starboard Velvet Drive failed
Thank you. did you pull it out of the centre hatch to the engine room or straight up through the hatch above the engine?
Need to just do it. LOL
