A friend of mine chased an overheat problem for a long time and it turned out to be the intake hose going to the pump collapsed on the inside. It looked good on the outside.

Prowlerfish, Waywe go, & others who have been helping me with this heating problem. First for being there a big thank you, as you probably know, it gets a little lonely o there when you have problems that just drive you crazy, & its great to communicate with guys of like interest anyway. And now for the rest of the story!!! It's okay to laugh, guffaw, swear, or whatever other exclamation you might have. Sunday morning, I took the pump apart, & almost passed out. There before my eyes were 2 of the small , shorter impellers in the pump, rather than 1 of each. I felt like such a fool seeing this. I installed a new, larger one & buttoned it up, as the inside of the pump looks new, no gouges, scoring or anything wrong. Today I reinstalled it on the boat, & I have a sweet running, cool, 440 engine purring away!! I ran it about an hour at various speeds, & all is great. Again I feel silly, but that's the truth. And, Prowlerfish, you are right on, it was the Salt Ponds Marina we talked about. The photo is exactly as I remember it, & it truly is a small world. Now, tomorrow starts the serious look at the starboard engine. It runs, but has symptoms of the port engine before the valve job, so have my honey lined up to run the key for the compression test. Will keep y'all in the loop, if we're still speaking/emailing. Thanks again for all the support. Dave.

Hi everybody, Please don't yell at me, you may want to laugh, or guffaw though. Long story short, with nothing else to try to solve this overheating problem, I pulled the pump off again. Remember, I rebuilt both pumps before launch in June, so thought they were fine. well, when I opened it up, I was shocked! I had installed 2 of the smaller impellers, rather than 1 bigger & 1 smaller. The pump is in great shape, so I put it together & installed it this morning. TERRIFIC!!!!! The engine runs fine, & stays cool at about 140 degrees. Even though all this was my fault, I have really appreciated all your suggestions & ideas to try to help me. The forum really works, & helps. What great folks. I hope after reading about this faux pau, y'all wont kick me under the bus. And yes, Prowlerfish, that is the exact marina! When I saw the name I was sure, but the photo removed any question. Good call, nice spot. Tomorrow, compression test on the other engine, suspect a valve job on that also. Will keep y'all posted. Good morning everyone, I sent a couple of messages lately, but not sure where they went! Anyway, the inspection of the double pocket water pump netted a near miracle!! When i had rebuilt both pumps before launch this spring, I inadverntly installed 2 of the small impellers, rather than the larger one in the deeper pocket. Now, with all I've done, the engine runs smooth & cool at 140 degrees. I'm sorry to have led all you contributors on this wild goose chase when it was my mistake, but I do appreciate the help, & comraderie. Yesterday a compression test indicated a teardown of the other engine. 3 dead cylinders, 2 caused by a blown head gasket,so lots of excercise for me, but easier today dropping heads off at the engine shop.
