AC replacement-10 meter sedan

I'm thinking of replacing the salon AC in my 10 meter sedan. The current setup is a split system with the compressor located in the engine room and the fan/evaporator in the salon overhead.

I would love to hear what other owners have done to replace this type of setup. My thought is to mount a self contained unit in the overhead rather than get another split type system. This is something I could install myself for less money as I wouldn't have the expense of running new copper refrigeration lines through the boat. This would also remove the unit from the heat of the
Engine room and give me a little more space down there.

Thoughts??

Would you even have room over head ? Likely need a bigger water pump that can pump that high . And you will need to run water lines and a condensation drain . Self contained A C units can be nice just not sure it would be a good fit there .

on my 1983 express refit I chose the Cruiseair system

stayed at 16.000 Btu - same as factory

modified the compressor "stand" and used starboard

has heat and AC

no problems in 15 years !

???? Do you mean don't go with a split system or yours was not a split system ? It looks like the OP has a split system now .

What issue do you have now ? Other then the compressor in the ER ?

There is not enough room in the overhead in the salon of a 10 meter sadan to but a self contained marine AC unit up there.

If the compressor is bad just change it out. A new compressor will come with a new thermostat controls. You would not need to put new copper lines in.

Changing out the compressor will be less expensive then any other option. Especially trying to do some kind of retrofit.

If there is something wrong with the overhead AC exchanger we have a complete new one.

There is a leak somewhere in the system. I do not know where it is as I haven't thoroughly checked yet, but there is absolutely no pressure in any of the refrigeration lines. I'm thinking it could be somewhere in the 35 year old copper lines for ALL of the pressure to be gone.

Thanks, that's the advice I was looking for. I was hoping someone would chime in and say that they've added a self contained unit in the overhead without issue, but I guess that's not the case.

At least now I know the path I should be taking.

the express was not designed as a split system

We replaced the compressor once since we bought the bought. Then we had a entire system failure. We gave up the cabinet for the salon and put 2 all in one units in it.
