mercruiser zinc anodes

Post by NealW »

I wondering if anyone knows where the zinc anodes are located for the 5.7 mercruiser. It is a closed system. The engine is not original to the boat so i'm not sure of the year of the engine, but i'm guessing late 80's early 90's. Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Neal

Should be in the heat exchanger and trans cooler If you have a engine oil cooler there will be a zinc there also

i pulled what I thought were the zincs from the heat exchanger, but they were just bolt to keep the ends of the exchanger on. The had no sign of zincs attached to the ends and they looked to be stainless steel. I'm very confused.

I talked to the guy at the marine store. He told me there were no zincs on this engine - not needed. Is this right? I would think that the manifolds would take a beating without them.

When you say its a closed system do you mean it has a coolant tank with antfreeze in it ? If so it should have zincs . At least this is what I have found on fresh water systems .rust is what you have to worry about on the manafolds and and zincs won't help there. but you do need zincs to protect you cooleres and exchangers .have you talked to a merc. dealer ?
