Electronics - Raymarine C120W ??

Post by mpulsev10 »

What do you think of the Raymarine C120W ? I am thinking of purchasing to use for 4 in 1. Radar, Fish finder, GPS and back up cam. Any thoughts ? Any one currently using? Anything else comparable in price you'd like to share thoughts on ?

thanks!

I have never used one but a friend of mine put one in his fishing boat and complains about it constantly. He says it quits working once in a while and he also says he has trouble figuring out how to use everything on it. but that is the only negative I have heard. Personally, I use Garmin and have never had a problem. I also use seperate units for redundancy,(if one goes out I still have the others). With an all in one unit if it goes out you have nothing, and if you are going to put in backup units,.. well...you get my drift. But that's just me. There are lots of them being used out there.

I will ever buy another Ray product period.

autopilot fluxgate compass failed under warranty

radar dome failed under warranty

autopilot motor has now failed out of warranty.

connections at the back of the unit drop "O" rings and pull out of thier connection as the locksdon't hold.

IMHO it's doo doo.

You will never see raymarine on my boat . A frend spent 10k on his E120 system and it sucked . then he spend more to to Up grade it . just to get it to work right ( like his old furuno ) My Koden system worked much better for less then a 1/3 the cost . but not as good as my old Furuno .

Furuno is the best but can cost you $$$ . the Garmin systems are looking real good . lot of bang for the buck . Every one that I know is happy with then .

I would give garmin a hard look .But if price is no proplem I would go with furnuo

Another brand you might want to look at is JRC. It's been very reliable and alot of bang for the buck. I will definitely stay with them.

I have an OLD Raytheon (Raymarine now) 24 mile open array radar which has been good, although the crt is starting to go out. With that being said, the HD units Tony speaks of, look real good when it's time to replace.

I run a Garmin 2010 chart plotter (10") screen and love it. You can not go wrong with a Garmin, MFD or stand alone unit.

I have a Furuno F/F and it works well. Although I'd like to have a newer Lowrance side scanning unit!

But...Raymarine would be the last unit I'd put on my boat.

UPDATE:

Since this post in 2009, the Fluxgate compass has failed again.

Out of warranty.

It is mounted on the forward bulkhead in the engine room and sees no exposure to salt, water, apray, rain, moisture or anything.

My next door neighbor GAVE ME a DSC compatible VHF radio - it's a Raymarine unit.

Nice pretty grey, matches all my other components and has a gentle red illuminated screen, ah it is so pretty...... and it is an upgrade from my non-DSC VHF.

Interesting design feature: The back of the microphone has a flip cover with the emergency button behind it. This is good as it is unlikely that the button is pressed by mistake.

It is bad as the microphone has no method of attachment anywhere. So it either dangles or I put velcro on it (crude and ineffective) or take the attachment button off an old CB radio and get a longer screw to attach it to one of the fasteners on the case of the Ray microphone (more crude, but more effective)

I chose the latter.

Give me function over form any day.

Never again will I have anything to do with another Raymarine product again. EVER!

No wonder they went thropugh a bankruptcy reorganization.

From my own multiple experiences IT'S PURE KRAPP!
