Ross is that wood between the hull and the packing box ? Mine did not have any and I did not install any when I replace my rudder packing box .
I wound if I should put some in .?

Paul - I believe that is wood. Its very difficult to see down there, so I put the camera down there and took photos in several modes/positions, and loaded them on my laptop to review what I needed to do. I'll check later.
I don't think I would add wood if you have none. I would use a composite ("non-rottable") material instead. I don't think its necessary at all, since you have support above with the wood cross member and support between the stuffing box and the tiller arm.
