mid cabin - stairs

Post by BobCT »

A couple of you guys were interested, I'm re-doing my stairs now and been taking some pics along the way.

I'll provide more detail but my plan is to use the old steps as a template and re make them out of 3/4" teak. I have them out, just haven't made them yet.

The risers are just 1/4" veneer and rather than replace that (which wouldn't be too hard), I'm filling all the imperfections with "bondo" which I finished today. I'll be painting those with an oil based paint.

I also added a teak strip all the way across the theshold above the 1st step and got rid of the extra piece of carpet that sticks out on the left.

More to follow, but definately doable if you're handy.

Bob,

What's underneath the steps? I've thought if it's dead space, couldn't be used for storage, if the steps were hinged?

especially under the bottom step but you wouldn't be able to hinge that, it slides under the riser for the second step.

If you somehow hinged the riser for the TOP step you would have easier access into the back part of the storage area over the mid cabin.

I have take plenty of pics which I can forward.

One storage goldmine I did discover is under the table seating. If you remove the cushions and the oval shape insert closest to the head you'll see a nice little storage area. I'm going to install an access panel right across from the the head door at floor level. Would be perfect for my tool box and misc stuff.

I've had the same thought. I have items rarely needed stored there.

If you get a chance shoot me some pixs of the steps removal.

Thanks
