BLACK JACK is back....in the water

Post by DOUGNASH »

OK, so just a little update...

Got her to South Amboy NJ at Lockwoods Boatworks about 3-4 weeks ago.

She was put back in the water yesterday.

Both motors started without much hesitation, so I'm happy with that.

I should be taking the ride to home port this weekend.

I will keep you posted.

I will start posting some pics too.

Here is a link that shows 1 pic of the stern with new tabs, lights, paint, etc...

http://www.thehulltruth.com/marine-elec ... hts-2.html

Below is just a partial list of what was done.....

removed the 75-80 or so pee sized blisters below the waterline

re-conditoned the 4-blade props (lockwoods)

stripped shafts to bare metal

installed new trim tabs, cylinders, hoses, hardware

installed south bay strainers on both engine thru-hulls

installed new zincs on shafts and boat

had lockwoods remove 3/8" threaded SS rods that was holding zinc on the stern of boat, it was also being used as a ground on inside, had them install a 1/2" copper threaded rods, much, much better

installed 6 blu LED underH2O lights on stern

put on 2 coats interlux black to go over the horrible maroon that was previously on the bottom, I don't know what the story was, but the guy who owned her previously, definitely had an obsession with the colors red and purple, it is all ove r the vessel, inside outside....YUCK

I think that is it for below water line.

Then started with motors.

checked all fluids, all will be changed at home port.

installed new zincs.

installed new Groco PLASTIC strainer baskets on raw water intakes

inspected RW impellers

replaced numerous SS hose clamps and hose on RW cooling on motors, there were a couple of leaks

inspected fuel filters, will be replaced at home port

removed leaking fuel vacuum gauge and plugged

Looks like all is going according to plan.

Your shakedown cruise will tell you more about her specifically and allow you to create a punch list of issues to deal with.

We're all looking forward to more photos and tales.

Here she is in the water, I ran the motors for about 30 minutes at the dock, then took her for a quick spin down the canal, did a 540 degree SPIN, because I can!!!

I will drop in lets say about 300 gallons of diesel, especially since it will be cheaper than in NY.

I drive her to Freeport on Sunday!!!

better take lots of spare fuel filters.

Who knows how dirty those tanks might be after all the sitting she has done.

Get to know her well and all of her systems and start a punch list.

Best wishes for a great shakedown cruise!

OK, got her back to Freeport Long Island safely.

Took it nice and slow, between 15 and 16 knots, about 1700 rpm's.

About a 3 hour ride, beautiful day though!!!

There is something going on with the port motor, very little boost, can see some dark smoke from exhaust.

When I was at Lockwoods, I had the younger brother Robert take a sea trial with me, he said the intercooler is probably clogged.

I wil keep you posted on that one...

too much fuel or not enough air.

Do you have pyrometers and boost guages?

We're heading out for fireworks on the harbor now...

nJOY the fireworks!!!

Yes boost gauge was barely showing any boost.

Also ran 40 degrees hotter than other motor.

I am going to take her out again 2mrw, I have an infrared temp gun so I will find out exactly the temps of both motors.

I also did not change air filaments yet, I will do that 2mrw morning B4 the ride.

ANy other suggestions?

Doug,
When you say 40 degrees hotter than the other engine, what is that engine running at? What is the temp of each engine according to the gauges?
Heat is the No#1 killer of those engines.
Hard to tell from the pics but are you running AirSeps? Looks like your element has some kind of a cage around it. Those elements get dirty fast with these old two strokes and will resrtict air flow big time. Make sure they are clean.
Check the emergency shut down doors and make sure they are fully open.
