forward transmission slip in 1979 F32
1979 F32 Trojan w twin 228 Mercruisers. While on plane starboard engine reved high with no thrust in forward transmission. Reverse works fine but forward only at idle speed and no htrust in forward. Do I need a new transmission or is their an affordable fix?

Velvet Drives?
Check trans fluid:
1) Level - If low - fill it (don;t overfill).
2) Dirt/Metal - check for dirt, metal in the fluid by pulling the stick and wiping it (repeatedly if necessary) across a clean paper towel or rag. Metal (copper?) is bad - as is dirt, etc.
3) White or foamy - water got in - you mentioned earlier a mix of water/raw water in your engie s- perhaps your tranny cooler is leaking water in/out as well.
In any case, why not change the fluid and see if that helps it?

- Uses oil type: GM Dexron III, Ford Mercon, Daimler-Benz 236.6 or any SAE 10 hydraulic oil that meets Allison Type C3, Caterpillar TO-2 or equivalent specifications.
Oil capacity: 5 US quarts (4.9 liters).
Some high performance applications may result in foaming and leakage from transmission's vent. Under these circumstances, Velvet-Drive suggest using oils meeting Allison Type C3 or Caterpillar TO-2 specifications. In addition, it may be necessary to experiment with fluid level in these applications.

Borg Warner Velvet Drive Owners Manual
Borg Warner Velvet Drive 71c & 72c Inline and V-Drive Transmissions use 2-4 quarts (table 1.1) plus oil cooling system capacity (section 2-10) of GM Dexron III, Ford Mercon, Daimler-Benz 236.6 or any SAE 10 hydraulic oils that meets Allison C3, Caterpillar TO-2 or equivalent specifications as per the Owners Manual:

I encourage anyone with these transmissions to download the manual above and check/change the fluid on schedule, and to insure that their transmission cooler is colling properly. Low fluid and overheating kill transmissions.

Rossjo the info in the http://www.glen - links is poor to say the least . It sure is not good info for a Velvet dive 71 or 72 series
the info form RNR is much better . I would remove the links to http://www.glen as it is useless and wrong at best .

Actually, everything there is directly from the Owners Manual, except the 5 Quarts - which is probably correct for the 4-Quart model when you add enough to fill the cooling lines.
