Great looking job--have been thinking of up-dating mine---did you have to remove the formica before setting the tile or just sand it down? Also what treatment did you do with the above counter?
thanks for the kind words RICKand BIGD. we have been very happy with the results i think it really upated the galley.
FPAWN1 i did not remove the formica before the tile install. i found great reviews on this product. Tavy thin set mortar underlayment system. tavy system for short. its a 2 part system but very easy. if the formica is adhered well and is not pulling up anywhere this product allows installation over the formica. they have a website and the product was purchased at my local lowes store. i will also give two thumbs up on it.part1 is a glue with a special fiberglass thick paper then the thin set bed of mortar and then the standard install of tile with thin set mortar. i have had no issues with it at all. probably will install the same tile on the counter in the head the same way this fall/winter project.
i also have 12v white rope light string hidden under the entire cabinet that gives down light on the counter top, you cant see it in the pic. when turned on really adds something to the look . i think
With regard to tiling the counter tops in your head. Just picking your brain to see how you see it that playing out? I have the original formica counters in both my heads (tricabin) and was considering a winter project of replacement with corian. Last year I replaced my galley counter top with corian and we've been pleased with it so far (especially the moulded- in sink).
Your tiled galley looks really sharp and I'm wondering about the head and if you would for example, be using smaller tiles because of the smaller surface area?
My head counter tops are curved. Are yours? The curvature may present a problem for me I suppose, when it comes to tiles.
thanks larglo
rick i bet your corian looks really sharp too. i thought about it also but was thinking of doing this upgrade myself.
curves may be more of a challenge for cuts
in my f32 and others the counter in the head is just straight piece no curves . (might have also influenced my decision a bit to use the granite). however the sink is a round one. might be tricky there.in the galley all were also straight cuts. after i laid out all my tiles and developed patterns that i drew on the back of each tile that needed cutting my wife became friends with one of the guys at lowes and she took them in very early one morning and they cut them for us, didnt have a whole lot and he gave her a deal on the price.($9.00) not sure about cutting the granite in other than straight lines. i have thought about the smaller tiles in the head but i didnt want a ton of grout lines either. will see as it gets closer. we generally had planned to have the same look in both areas when we started but i dont want i to overwhelm the space either. our theme is neutral browns and blacks so this color schemes fits perfect. part of the reason i think the trojan style is a timeless classic at least on the f series. i havent had the pleasure of getting on other trojans yet. i can only look at pics. hope to go to the trojan rendevous next time.
