parts for J&T 6-71 detroit deisel
I have read on other blogs that parts are hard to find for these engines? I would also like to know what type of yearly maintenance is involved? And what the cost is approx. Thanks,Kevin

Some of the internal parts can be hard to get , OEM at least . There are so many of these around that you will be able to get parts for a long time ' OEM pistons and liners have been a little hard to get as D D no longer cares to supports these or any of the 2 cycle engines . F.M. makes some good replacement internal parts , some of the other aftermarket parts are so so . If you are buying this or any other Diesel boat I strongly rec you join boatdiesel . com . We have a hand full of diesel owners here and I believe most are boatdiesel members There is a lot of diesel info there , and you don"t see me recommending other sites

For ANY 20+ year old boat there is probably more "AUTHORIZED" support for our orphaned brand than many still in production.

A fellow boater bought an Ocean with a pair 6-71 DD. Takes forever to start all the while smoking up the whole place. Safe to say that the white smoke is fuel and he has low compression?

We have 671 DD's in our 11 meter international and they do not smoke. They start fairly easily too. We do keep heaters in them. They are the lower wattage ones. We run heaters year round. Ours were completely rebuilt two years ago with OEM parts. That was the only way the mechanic would do it. So far so good.

sounds like a tierd / worn out DD to me some smoke on start up is normal but should clear up ( warm weather ) quickly. when temps fall they do get harder to start around 50 deg good idea almost a must ) to use block heaters and sure won't hurt at warmer temps . this will help at lot any time when their worn .
