Shop Rates
Thought it would be interesting to see what the shop rates for mechanical work are where you guys are from. It seems in my area the range is from $89 to $110 per hour in marinas, and $50 and up for freelancers.

Have not had to use my marina's services as of yet but can tell you this, NO freelancers allowed, before you can have an outside repair service come in all work has to go thru the marina office and the outside vendor has to provide proof of insurance before they can even look at the boat.

Not sure about hourly rates but the mechanic that is pulling my engine is charging me a flat rate of $2100.....that includes removal, tear down, delivery and pick up of long block to machine shop, reassembly, re-installation, alignment and water test.....I thought that was reasonable.........no work has started so we will see how it goes, but they have a good reputation. Machine shop is charging $2100 for the rebuild...............John

I am in a "big boat" marina with over 600 boats ranging in size from 22 feet to slightly over 100 feet in length. Since the marina offers no mechanical service of their own, other area marinas and freelancers in the area are allowed to come in to perform all types mechanical and electrical work. They all have to be bonded and provide proof of insurance.
The one I use charges $85/hr which seems to be the going rate around here.

Here in the the Florida panhandle, rates range from $50.00-$85.00 for engine work and around $125.00 for electrical/electronics work. Some guys charge travel. The marinas allow contractors who have insurance and a few marinas charge the contractor a yearly fee ($50.00-250.00)per year to work in their marina.
Have it here at Bluffers, it is what the mechanic charges to come to your boat at the dock as opposed to taking it into their shop. Shop usually means you have hauled out and are "in the garage", so to speak.Big D wrote:Ross, never heard that expression before. What is "dock rate"?

I can see paying travel time ( very common ) but to pay more per hour ?? thats a plane rip off . the only extra charges should be the travel time and if the marina takes a cut ( some do ask for % of the bill )rossjo wrote:Here:
