Another pump

Post by wbchinook »

Hi everyone. I just joined your forum.
I am the proud owner of a 1974 32 ft. Trojan. My second Trojan. I have found a pump under the forward dinette seat which is on the starboard side in this boat. Could someone tell me what this pump is for.
Have been fighting a water leak in the house water system for a couple of weeks. I cannot find any more leaks but still hear a sputtering sound when the water is running. Is there a chance that that the line between the tank and pump could have a flaw? The pump won't shut off like it should. The pressue dosn't seem to bleed off after I shut the pump off.
Thank's for any help.

my 78 f32 has no pump where you are speaking of. but i wonder if it is the pump for the shower(mine is located under the sink in the galley and pumps overboard through a through hull there. you might try that switch in the head for the shower. if not if you cant follow the hoses far then you might apply 12 volts temporarily from a battery to that pump directly and see if you can hear or see what it might pump.

the house water tank on mine is under the cockpit floor. you have filled that up? if you have, make sure you have also run the water pump long enough to have bled the air from the water heater.. might take longer than you think. do you know what size yours is? and location. if you have purged all the air out of the system and still getting some air you could check the inlet tubing and clamps to the pump. if it is old and wont turn off oyu might consider a replacement

Ditto on g36. It takes a long time to bleed the hot water lines/tank all the way to the bathroom. It's also hard to tell if the line from the tank to the pump have good tight connnections. Any air leak on the intake side will cause that without showing water leaking. I think most of us have had that problem at one time or another.

Re pump

Post by wbchinook »

Thanks for the input and welcome. My water tank is also under a deck in the cockpit. I have run at least six tanks of water through the system since I moved onto the boat three weeks ago.
I had good pressure in the system this morning, even though the pump was shut off all night. There is still some sputtering as the water runs. I think the pump is compressing some air in the lines. This acts like an accumulator, which helps with the pressure.
I am going to attack the hose between the pump and tank this morning.
My shower pump also is under the sink. The masserator pump is just above it. My mystery pump is under the forward seat in the dinnette. There are three drawers under the seat with a space to the hull.
Thanks again.

another pump?

Post by TADTOOMUCH »

It may be a condensate pump for your air conditioner if you have one. Can you see if the lines running from it go to a through-hull fitting?

If you have A/C it could also be the water circulation pump for the A/C. What size hoses are connected to it? What color is the pump. My March pump for the A/C is red.

I am a little red faced. The mystery pump turned out to be a Impulse Compass 430. It looked like a pump from the top. My boat has a Course Setter 21 by Benmar auto pilot. I guess my so called pump is the brains of the auto pilot system. I have no idea if the system works.
I replace the old hose between the tank and water pump. Flushed the lines and soon the water stream was a lot more steady etc. Turned the taps off and the pump kept running until I was sure it had enough time to pressure up. I crawled back down and switched the pump for a new washdown pump I had. Guess what? It shut off like it should. Great day at last. Went on line and the original pump is a shower pump but I think it has a pressure shut of switch. Any way I have hot and cold water.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi and welcome,
i had a similar problem with my fresh water system, it turned out to be the plastic hose barb on the inlet strainer to the pump was kind of crushed so the pum was sucking air. the strainer was above the tank so it didnt leak at rest. I replaced the pump and strainer , fixed the problem.

as far as the auto pilot part, I would bet it is the heading compass for the auto pilot.
