Big Round Hole in center of Tri-Cabin Helm Station

Post by rcamaine »

Not knowing what this should look like, I have a large round hole in the center of my helm station on my 1980 Tri-Cabin. It was covered up by this cheap looking beverage holder.

It sits between the two control levers - is about 5" in diamter - drilled clean through the fiberglass. It kind of looks like it would be for a compass of sorts, although I already have a compass mounted on top of the helm panel.

Except for a mistaken hole drilled there by some previous owner - any one have any ideas? Needlees to say I want this covered as it will cause all sorts of leaks down into the galley.

I am going to place a nice piece of teak there instead of that cheesy can holder in the spring.

Thanks.

Don't know what hole is for. But I'd glass it in then cover it with some teak..

If it is like my '79, there was a speedometer there. I think it is original equipment. You might check with Bob to see if you can get one. The sensor is probably still in place.

I wasn't aware that some models originally had a compass in this location. what do you see when you look down through the hole? That is where the hydraulic steering reservor is in our boat and I have to check and/or top off fluid level annually. If there is anything there that requires access, a removable hole cover of somekind would be in order.
