Project: the engines are finally running, I have a few loose end details still remaining but I am so close I can taste it.
The fly wheel covers on both engines rubbed the fly wheel so I have had to remove and reinstall the starters 4 times to fix the issue ( caused by adapting the 305 bell housings to the 165's, the 305 fly wheel cover did not have a starter opening, as the starters were mounted up and facing aft on the bell housing. so I had to cut an opening for the starter on the cover, the clearance is very close so if there is any bend at all, it sounded like the starter remained ingaged when the engines were running
The transmission cooler lines are being made I write this update.
I have installed new exhaust hose and replaced the exhaust hose connections between the fiberglass tube, muffler and transom discharge. (and clamps)
I still need to run the engines and transmissions while still safely tied up in the slip to check temps and shaft alignment (again) but I plan to get under way Saturday.
I must say that the six cylinders have a really great sound at the exhaust when running!
thanks for everyones interest and encouragement

By the way,
I weighed the engines and transmissions (165's and twin disc 502's) prior to installing them and they weighed 750 lbs, minus heat exhanger, oil cooler exhaust riser and hoses. does anyone have any idea what mercruiser 305s and velvet drives weigh?
The boat does seem a bit lighter, but a few hundred punds shouldnt make much difference (?)

hi scott, aaron in baltimore here. are you in oceanside harbor marina? if so, you might see the tri cabin i grew up on roaming around somewhere down there. her name, as far as i know, has not been changed. she is a 1972 trojan f-36 tri cabin, BUBALA 3. if you see her, give her a pat on the transom and tell her godspeed. nice work on the repower btw. i love looking at the progress. (they look like a petrol version of ford lehmans)
i wonder if that would work on my tri cabin if i ever need to repower. with inlines, what HP would i need? she weighs in at around 17,500 lbs. can you say permanent trawler? hmmm, i wonder if i repower if i can go with a powerful 4 or 6? suggestions?

she has since changed hands again, this is the listing from early summer 2011. i still get emotional when i look at her. how i would have loved to have brought her back home to the east coast and lovingly taken care of her.

Aaron,
thanks for the compliments, it has been a longer than expected project but it is all coming together, both engines are running and I plan to get underway maybe this evening. I dont plan on pushing it until I make sure there are no issues with the cooling systems, the older fuel and of course shaft / engine alignment, so performance updates may take a while.
I keep the boat in Coronado but pass through Oceanside often, I'll swing through the harbor next time I am passing by and look for Bubala 3. if she is still there, I get a photo for you.
as far as repowering your boat with inline gas six cylinders, not sure. my previous boat was a CHB34 sedan "the gettaway" that was in Ocenaside Harbor when I bought it back in 1996, it had a single Lehman, it pushed her consistantly at 7 knots. Hence the one reason I am ok with twin 165's in the Trojan, If I get a consistant 13 -14 knots in this boat , I have doubled my speed, also, I got an incredible deal on the engines and I have the resources to do almost the entire repower myself.
Had I not had the advantage, I would have most likely rebuilt the one bad engine and kept her the same.
you'll have to decide how you boat and if you are ok with slowing down all of the time. I am, the trip is the part of boating I enjoy, I don't fish so I dont need to get to the hundred mile bank in a couple of hours, If I want to get somehwere in a hurry, I'll have to drive.

hey scott, thanks for getting back to me. i was doing some research online and found this on youtube. i love the sound of this engine, of course, it does not have a muffler. but, i question the exhaust water running down the front of it while it's running. would it not have been more prudent to put a longer piece of hose to get the water away from the engine?gettaway wrote:Aaron,

my boat was repowered in 1996 with seamaxx engines by pleasure craft marine. no need to repower as of now, but you never know........ if you look at my photobucket page, you can see the engines. they are 250hp on a ford 351 block. when they start up, the absolutely purr like kittens. (it's the underwater exhaust system that i cannot stand) also, if i went with an 'inline' the double exhaust intakes for the underwater mixer will have to be modified. they are still made by centek, so if i went with a single manifold/riser system, i would have to get a centek mixer system with only one inlet. i'm with you as i'm not a speedster.... i don't mind going 15-17 kts. if not an inline, then maybe a smaller v6 would work. depends on how much strain the engines would be under pushing almost 18k of boat.

me too!
I have found myself the last couple of nights making myself slow down and not over look anything in my anxioety to get her out of the slip.
this getting dark at 5:00 sucks and I really dont want to rush it and have a problem away from the slip, in the dark.

Mobile update,
Just took her for a half hour spin around the bay, purrs like a kitten, post inspection:
Port stuffing box too tight
Slight leak at the discharge hose on stb raw water pump
Slight drip on hose at intake side of port engine circ pump
I didnt open throttles beyond about 1500 but no hesitation at all. No gps aboard to check speed on this trip.
Yeah!
