This is an interesting thread. Like aaron I have also wondered about my vents in the engine room. The vent boxes are plywood and completely closed off except for the blower. Or so it appears

I have a 10 Meter 1986. when i took the vent louvers off to repaint them, there were no obstructions. I have never had an overheating problem or a fumes problem, so I have to assume they should not be blocked.
mine is a 1987 10 meter mid cabin. I have four, five inch flex hoses comming off the mid-ship side louvers (two hoses on each side).four more five inch hoses under the "hidden panels " at the stern (two each side) and one more 4 inch bilge blower behind the port hidden panel. Eight intakes and one blower! I just bought a second blower today. I think I am going to add it to one of the two hoses on the starboard side as a backup. I'm concerned because the largest bilge hose west marine could get me was 4inch (just ordered a 50 ft box) so im down sizing from what was there.

My marine surveyor told me something I didn't know...... if you have twin engines in the cabin area of the boat your supposed to have 2 blowers. Anybody else heard that?

Todd - that's weird, I have a blower on each side on my '88, four hoses connected to each. Maybe that was a model year upgrade?
Those are connected to the hull cutouts you mentioned on each side and are exhaust only. The Intake vents have two hoses connected to each vent, port and starboard.
Is there room to make the intake vents bigger? It would be great to get more air into the engine room for intake and also cooling.
I'd like to rework the intakes too but probably won't get to it until next year. In the meantime, I replaced the wood that the hoses are attached to so at least the water is funneled into the bilge and not splashing all over the gas tanks. I used some scrap teak.
Bob, I thought about making the louver bigger but I'm limited to the two four inch hoses. Heres my progress so far: I'm thinking of adding a 45 deg 4inch pvc elbow. if I caulk it in the top it should prevent rain and seawater from falling down the whole.
