Another newbie

If anyone knows of a supplier for the gasket material for my hatches, look at Bobbo's first picture, I would appreciate it.

Beacon has the original self adhesive 3/4" foam. But Bobbo's gasket looks more like a rubber gasket...maybe it's foam.

Anyway, Beacon has the original style self adhesive 3/4" foam but it's not cheap per foot,

you can buy self add foam anywhere i would think its all the same junk these days. Im going try. and i say TRY

because its free to me. an old car door weather seal. they are rubber and seal air tight, some good 3m black adhesive and a clean cut should give me a very tight over lapping seal. its worth a shot i think. even if it has to be a certian width, i will just have to track down which car to get it from.

I have been around boats my entire life. . .

When I first joined this site. . . I used to laugh at the amount of money people poored into their Trojan Yachts some being 30 to 40 years old. I mean serious money - that people on this site have spent, but they have done amazing things to their boats. I have learned many things and taken in many great ideas.

Suddenly, as each weekend passes . . . home depot, ace, west marine, larsen marine, and the dollar store - I still laugh as I am dolling out the money because now I am one of "those people" making my 1978 F30 to be impressive!!

I have no regrets and have learned tons from this site!!!!

Cant wait until Monday when one of my clients who owes me a "few" is going to come and take all the upholestry out to take it from the late 80s to the present!!!!

I cant wait to one client pays me to get that new "special" head!!!!!

Oh and then my chart plotter to replace the "Loran C"

Welcome to the forum.....I see you are at h the Pier 500 marina. I have a 1980 F-32 at the Ford Yacht club. Yours looks beautiful!! You also look very familiar, we must have met sometime in the past!

Thank you Seedler and yes I'm at Pier 500, it's six blocks from the house.

We probably have met. I don't know how long you've been at Ford but I've been in Wyandotte for twenty years now. Growing up my Father was a member at WYC when it was actually located in Wyandotte. I would always tag along to the different clubs and various functions. I've met a lot of boaters and club members.

Maybe We'll run into each other, have a few Ginger ale's and swap stories someday.

Jeff is right. When going on the shakedown cruise I remember the previous owner telling me about those. He said it's automotive weather sealing. Works pretty good. I did have a few leaks coming across Lake Erie in six footers that were crashing over the bow. I think I could have had the hatches a tad tighter. Never leaked when I washed it so we'll see this year.

I also had a little water coming in through the side windows. I think where the glass overlaps and there is a small gap? Not sure. Is this common?

im going to try my auto weather seal this weekend, i think it will work good. if it does its free seals to everyone who wants them, I get them all the time. they have clip holes and can be cut to size. nothing some good 3m glue cant patch. the squish down theory of true tall rubber works perfect on car doors. so.... guess we will see!

my boat is alot smaller. but have side window leaks, seems to be around my window seams, easy fix for me. maybe you can replace your felt stipes? there has been many post of window leaks, do a search. im removing refabing and reinstalling with urethane seal. outer base that is

RE the weatherstripping on the hatches - maybe I am going blind, but I am not seeing any in those pics. Around the edges of the hatches I see the normal wood trim 'lip', but I don't see anything else.

The challenge in getting a new seal for these hatches is the size / offset you need... Because of the raised ridge from the deck and how the hatches hinge, I think the right size is 1" wide by 3/4" thick, and not too many places carry stuff that size. I think I used 3/4" x 3/8" adhesive foam tape from Home Depot a couple of years back, and just put on 2 layers of it (Tago brand, I believe).
