Lower Helm Wheel Replacement

Post by katprice »

We have the wooden wheel from Hugger I that we would like to put on the lower helm of Hugger II. Got the original wheel off, but the shaft is too short to fit the wooden wheel. Any adapter kits out there?

I replaced lower helm wheel on my '79 with the wooden wheel from my father's old '69. Hub was different size and taper. The '69 wheel had a smaller hub, but I didn't want to risk damaging or destroying by having it machined out. Couldn't find any adapters on the market, so designed one and had it custom machined out of aluminum billet. Cost me about $300 (8 hours milling time according to the shop I had do it).

Katrina,
You can do a search but there are adapters out there, dependent on the wheel, shaft size and taper vs no taper. Here's one of the leading companies which makes and sells adapters.
