Changing the Prop Shaft

Post by LLCD »

We have all heard it. BOAT= Break Out Another Thousand :(

The Nina Colada II broke the Prop Shaft right at very end, right where it joins with the propeller.

It broke on the way back to the dock, now my prop is sitting in the bottom of the Intercostal here in Miami.

It broke due to corrosion and barnacle build up and we didn't notice it until... well... the boat didn't move. :(

Sunday we are pulling it out of the water. taking out the shaft, putting in a new one, with a new prop. and seals and everything.

Hopefully nothing else breaks and that's all we have to do. (knocking on wood, fingerscrossed) :|

It just broke without hitting something? That soundz like significant corrosion.

Yeah, It had a crack, and in that crack barnacles started to grow in it and it broke it.

Welcome onboard, I think you will find that the real problem is electrolysis not corrosion. Where do you keep the boat? there are a lot of hot marinas in Miami and this is a very common problem down here. Last haul out I had to replace a shaft because of pitting due to electrolysis and a zinc that I must have thrown off. For 60 bucks Dr zinc diving (in Miami) will come to the boat and scrub the bottom and change the zincs, if needed, and let you know of any pending problems.

A poorly installed prop or key way can break a shaft at the same place

And you can get electrolysis from someone else or the dock power system itself... if there is an electrical problem near enough to you, the stray current in the water can find its way to you even if you have no problems of your own.

Actually, maybe that's what summer storm meant by 'hot marinas'... ??

I wish I was talking about hot girls in bikinis but It's the stray current that's making things hot down here.

Really? I don't see anywhere in my post claiming that there is something wrong with you, nor did I tell you what was wrong with your boat. Read it again, I said "I think you will find" not, "your problem is"

The bottom line here is I was trying help you out and maybe save you some money in the future.

Remember, advice here is worth exactly what you paid for it, well, maybe Paul's is worth more but that's another story.

By posting a photo we we can give you a better idea(s) of the cause . And help keep it from happening again . If the new prop/shaft is not done right it could happen again . Installing the prop is easy and just as easy to screw up .
