Any good ideas?

Post by k9th »

My PO carpeted the entire bridge area right on top of the original fiberglass with what appears to be regular indoor/outdoor carpet. He used a large amount of glue. The carpet is coming loose and I would like to get rid of it altogether, but am at a loss as to how to get rid of all of that glue on the fiberglass without ruining the surface of the fiberglass.

Any ideas?

Heat and a putty knife...acetone for anything left. Avoid heat and acetone together...kaboom

Paper towels laid flat on the surface, then soak paper towels with 3m adhesive remover, wait 15 or 20 minutes, then remove paper towels and scrape away softened glue. The paper towels allow the remover to work, instead of just drying away before softening the glue.

3M Adhesive Remover is the ticket.

David's paper towels are a great idea!

Thanks everyone for all of the good ideas. You guys came through again.

Starting Friday evening I have nine days of vacation on the boat and we are going to do some travelling up the west coast of Lake Michigan. I am going to get the 3M product you all recommended and give it a try. I liked the paper towel idea also. Hopefully by the time I get back to our home port, I will have a nice fiberglass floor back instead of the carpet.

Not sure why anyone would glue carpet down. That kind of rendered the drain in that area useless. I've seen carpet before but it always had snaps installed in the floor and in the carpet so it could be easily removed.
