Island in Saginaw Bay on fire!

Post by k9th »

I just caught a news story on local TV that had an amazing story about an uninhabited island in Saginaw Bay - Heisterman Island - that is totally on fire. No one seems to know how the fire started and the fire department responsible for the island has no way to get to it. They have been told by the DNR just to let it burn itself out.

I used to anchor on the lee side of this island when I lived in the area. Great place to anchor, swim, and fish.

I would imagine any fire retardant that an aircraft dropped would be deemed hazardous by the DNR to the waters of the bay. It is in Saginaw Bay in a smaller area called Wild Fowl Bay.

It has been so wet in the area lately it is hard to believe that a fire of that magnitude was not intentionally set. We had more rain overnight so maybe it helped bring it under control.

thats a shame. places like that are usually the best place to hang around. sad to say its a neat picture as well. the look of it, not the situation of course.
