Velvet Drive fluid

Post by Landlocked »

Seems like I saw here once that we should use only Dexron III in the Velvet Drives. (Attached to Crusader 350's) I presently have Valvoline Dex Merc fluid in one and it's leaking like crazy. 1500 hours on it but no prop or shaft hits that I'm aware of. I really can't tell where the leak is. I assume it is on the bottom side of where the tranny bolts on to the engine. The dipstick is tight in the tube - no leak there.

Could the fluid be the culprit?

The fluid type is not the proplem "Valvoline Dex Merc fluid" is fine . if your seeing fluid leaking between the bell housing and the trans it could be the front input shaft seal or pump seal .

Thanks guys. Not the answer I was looking for. I've removed the starboard transmission (twice) in the past. Suckers are obnoxiously heavy. Guess the port side is jealous and wants some attention.

Since I'm catching the drip in a diaper I may just keep topping it until I work up some enthusiasm for the project.

Better to fix a seal than replace a tranny....
