Stuffing Box Nut Size

Post by The Dog House »

For a 1 inch shaft, are the packing nut and locking nut both 1 7/8 inches? I think they are but I'm looking for confirmation. Thanks for the info.

Have not measured mine but both are the same size, use an adjustable plumbing wrench, unless you thought as I to have a pair of wrenches cut out of sheet metal with shorter handles. When working on Vee drive would be easier.

I'm currently using adjustable wrenches, but since I have a V drive it is difficult. I'm thinking of buying short handled fixed wrenches and want to make sure I buy the correct sizes. I know the locking nut is 1 7/8 inches, so if they are the same size then the packing nut is also 1 7/8 inches. Thanks for the confirmation.

Well I measured mine the packing gland nut is 1 and 15/16 the jam nut is solid 2 inches. as big as they are a 2 inch wrench would fit both. That is assuming you have the same gland I do in my F28.

I have two v drives and they are surly tough but was able to get them loose and tight with plumbing wrenches. You should not need a wrench except to hold the gland while tightening the jam nut. As I said earlier I may have someone plasma torch a short handled wrench that would fit much better.

What size is your prop shaft? A 1 inch and 1 1/8 inch prop shaft should have a 1 7/8 inch lock nut. If you have a shaft larger than 1 1/8 inches, a 2 inch lock nut would make sense.

Each casting is used in 1 or 2 shaft sizes I belive . 1"-1 1/8 takes 2" wrench ,1-1/4" takes 2-5/16 wrench 1 3/8 & 1.5 take 2-9/16 wrench ,1 3/4 & 2" takse a 3-1/4 wrench .Per Buck Algonquin . Both nuts should be the same .
