SLIDER ON F-32

Post by EXCAVATE49 »

THE SLIDER ON MY 1986 F-32 IS OFF CENTERED TO STARBOARD I THINK IT IS TO ACCOMODATE THE L SHAPED COUCH. DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE THE SAME LAYOUT ? ALSO I AM GOING TO REFINISH THE WOOD FRAMES ON MY 3 HATCHES AND WAS WONDERING WHERE TO PUT THE GASKETS OR WEATHERSTRIP,ON THE BOTTOM OF WOOD FRAMES OR ON THE RAISED FIBERGLASS FLANGE OR WHAT, I REMOVED ALL THE OLD STUFF IT WAS A REAL RUBE GOLDBERG. ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED THANKS JACK

Put the foam gasket on the hatch itself, not the wood trim on the hatch, nor on the raised lip of the deck.
I have the hatch gaskets if you need to purchase, the gasket material is 3/4" x 1" and not easy to locate, other than with Bob.

Jack,

Try typing without using all capital letters. I'm not demeaning you by any means, just trying to help you since you said typing wasn't your strong point. Typing in all caps is a no-no on forums and internet dialog. The good folks here aren't saying that you're yelling at them...just that you're yelling in the form of writing. :D Take your time, start sentences and personal names with capital letters and don't worry about the rest...

More importantly, we're all here to help you with any boating questions you may have. No question is a dumb question!

I jury rigged a solution for one of my hatches : 1/2" x 1" Tago tape (Home Depot) with a layer of 1/4" pickup truck cap seal tape on top. Couldn't find the right size locally, and paying twice as much for shipping / duty / customs clearance as Beacon charges for the tape itself just makes me feel ill. Somehow the cap seal tape walks to one side or the other and it makes things kinda stick a bit (so have to open it slowly), but if you cant get the proper stuff through Beacon you can still build up the same thickness to give you the right seal.

To get the install right, I removed all old weatherstrip (that was warped all over the place), cleaned off all residue, and closed the hatch. Then from inside I laid some masking tape on the underside of the hatch as markers to lay out the inside edge of the hatch opening. Measured the lengths of weatherstrip needed (remember the overlaps required - measurements will give you inside diameter of the seals... outside diameter will be a bit bigger) and cut new pieces to size. Then opened the hatch full, and stuck the new weatherstrip to the hatch based on the tape lines and making sure to force pieces together where they joined / formed seams. If you don't do that last part, water under pressure on the deck could easily work between the separate pieces of weatherstripping and find its way in... a tighter seal and it won't. I had considered laying some caulk between the pieces of weatherstrip, but wasn't sure if that would help or make things worse...

Finally, I repeated the process sticking the 1/4" tap over top of the 1/2" I had already stuck on.

5 years now (I think), and no issues.
