put down some blue tape and mark out where you want the rod holder to go. get the proper size hole saw and start drilling. just before the teeth of the hole saw make contact with the fiberglass put the drill in reverse and allow the teeth to "burn" through the gel coat, this will help prevent the fiberglass from chipping. Take your time with the previous step and go slow. Depending on the angle of the rod holder you will have to angle the hole . After drilling the hole if you have any exposed wood it must be sealed up. I'm kind of partial to west system epoxy but you can use 5 minute epoxy. when you go to drill the holes for the mounting screws be sure to start in revers so they don't chip. I also like to slightly countersink/bevel the mounting holes because it allows for a better caulk seal around the screw.
If your going to boating in salt water try to find 316 stainless steel rodholders. I've been looking around for new ones and a lot of the deals out there for 304 stainless which wont hold up as well
Good Luck

Thanks Todd that helps a lot. There will be quite a few things I will have questions about how to do. Some immediate and some not.
