10.8 engine blowers

Post by fourreins »

Looking for a little help. I have a 1989 10.8 International and am trying to correct possible blower issues. We also had a boat explode at our marine about a week ago so this got me to start looking around my own engine room. I took a look and the only blower I see looks to be an inline blower which is connected to the hose that lands behind the gen. This hose exits the boat on the port side. After a little more investigation this inline blower was actually introducing the fresh air to the engine compartment. I would guess this was installed incorrectly??? It also appears that the starboard side has two fresh air intake hoses the dump fresh air behind each 454. Bob at Beacon said the boat should of had a flange blower mounted some place behind the port engine in the corner. I can't find any flange blower mounted in the boat. The breaker panel has a blower switch as well as the bridge. I also have a blower switch next to the generator. Does anyone know the original setup?

on the 10 meter express (not midcabin) the blower is mounted on the port side below and behind the stainless steel grille.

It is a flange mount.

It is attached to 4" flexible hoses and is designed to remove air from the lowest part of the engine compartment.

Flip on the switch when all is quiet and see if you can hear it.

Pull up a hatch if necessary.

RWS- Do you need to remove the grill to access the blower or can you get to it from the inside? Do you also have an inline blower for the gen? Im thinking this was added at some point.

my comments are specific to the 10 meter express -

that said, as I recall you cannot get to the blower from the outside.

You will have to remove the port side hatch to gain access - it's on the outboard side of the engine.

The bearing on mine went bad causing it to squeal.

That is where I looked for the blower. All I can see are the hoses leaving the engine compartment. Can you actually see the blower from the engine compartment or do I need to remove something to see it? Are the air ducts on the starboard side for drawing air in?

on the 1983 10 meter express, both sides have the stainless steel grilles.

both sides allow for air in or out

the blower is in the engine compartment.

port side

access is from the engine compartment

its on the other side of the motor, under the gunnel

kinda sorta below and behind that grille.

Same place on the mid cabin. Port side, inder gunnel behind the exterior panel. My panel had been modified with holes to blow right through. . The blower should be blowing air OUT of the engine room with the suction located deep in the bilge. The other hoses are to introduce fresh air to the same when there is a suction. (From the blower or more likely when the engines are running)
