Hot Coil

Post by Lawman »

Installed two new MSD Blaster2 coils Starboard motor shows 7.9 volts at the coil and battery #1 is charging 14.6 while running. Port motor shows 7.9 volts at the coil but only 13.5 at battery #2 while running and the coil is weeping oil ??? Both alternators are showing 14.6 volts while running, Both motors do have stock Chrysler electronic ignition, no points ? Any help would be appreciated.

I always try to instal coils vertical if at all possible--- you can get instal wiring instructions on MSD web---- with all my mopar stuff with MSD 6al etc and no points( reluctors in dizzy) I just eliminated the ballast resister by wiring the start and run circuits together thereby removing the lowered run volts to the points-- the resister lowers the run volts to the coil and points to make them last but we want power ,wahoo----- never had any issues wired that way ---let us know how the wiring goes--- the leaky coil could very well be bad----- Mike

MIke, thanks for your response. I had the ballast bypassed and thats how I fryed the first MSD coil getting a full 12 volts at the coil. I returned it and put a new one in and hooked up the ballast, now i'm at 7.9 volts at the coil so i'm not sure why i'm still slowly frying the coil and only getting 13.5 at the battery???

Do you have the old style round blaster coils,if so there is no way 12 v can fry them ---- check all your grounds --- MSD has had some bad stuff of late--- I went thru a number of digital boxes ,one after the other that were terrible and finally went back to old analog and all issues stopped---- maybe just get a standard coil from napa or pep boys---- That is all I can think of--- Mike

Go with a stock coil (resistor type ) On the lower voltage at the battery High resistance between the alternator and the battery is the likely cause , really the only cause that a 1.2 volt drop its a little high I assume you and using a meter at both places / the same meter correct ?

Yes, same meter. Mybe I should go back to the old coil (internal resistor) and bypass the ballast again and see how it is. It's just weird that the starboard motor is ok with the MSD coil and the port isn't ??

Starting to sound like maybe grounds----- clean your block grounds and run a ground from the cylinder heads to the block just as an added precaution--- too much resistance on that side can cause coil problems from the spark side of things--- honestly, if you do not spin the motor to over 4500 a stock coil is more than adequate----let us know what happens--- Mike
