Anybody ever store or dock their boat at Shumway Marina
Shumway marina is at the mouth of the genesee river that goes into lake Ontario near Rochester ny
Currently I am at Barretts marina in waterloo-a beautiful and safe marina. I am thinking of getting on a list and going to shumway who is much more expensive
More than double what I pay now. The reason is that I am about 45 minutes away but my son and daughter are 1 1/2 hrs away and everyone is working and can't get out to the boat during the week.We discussed it and decided to move the boat closer.
I would have to go quite away from seneca lake through the canal locks and go up to Oswego and enter lake Ontario and then about 60 miles or so west on lake ontario to get to shumway. The pros are no more expressway tolls and a lot less on car gas for everybody and more people having access to the boat at Shumway.Cons are I never went through the canal system and not exactly sure how to do it. The boat runs flawlessly-no problems whatsoever. engines are great and took it on several 30 miles trips during the summer.

Personally, I think you will be disappointed with the change of marinas. I am moving my boat from Irondequoit bay to Seneca Lake (either the state marina or Barretts). Shumway is extremely expensive all the way around. Their current fuel cost for non-ethanol is $5.35/gallon. If you want the boat in the area I would recommend Southpoint marina at the south end of Irondequoit Bay. They are still more expensive than Barrett's. but in my opinion are more economical than Shumway. Sutter's Marina is next door for fuel and pumpout. With the exception of a few of our Charter Boats that run out of Shumway because of location, I think you will find much better deals.
As far as traveling via the canal, it's actually pretty easy. You need to get a canal pass, which you can purchase at any lock. The locks work pretty easy. You can call ahead on Channel 13. You simply enter the lock and hang on to the cables as the lock rises or lowers. The best route to Rochester is to head toward the Oswego Canal. From Oswego, Rochester is about 55 miles. The trip from Seneca to Oswego can be made in a day, but its a long day and you're better off making it a couple day trip. There is plenty of good information on navigating the Erie Canal on the internet.
It's good to hear that you like Barrett's. We are relocating from Rochester to Seneca, and we are torn between trying to get into the State Park and Barrett's. The one thing I didn't like about the State Park is that after 5 years your name is put into a lottery to give other folks a chance to get in. I would hate to establish a great relationship with neighbors then have to move.
Let me know if you have more questions. I know the area pretty well. You have a few Marinas in the area of the Genesee River that will be cheaper.

Re: Anybody ever store or dock their boat at Shumway Marina
I keep my boat at Shumway in the Spring and the Fall for a few weeks each time as I'm moving the boat up and down Lake Ontario. I've been to a lot of ports all over the Lake, and this is one of the nicer marinas you'll find on the South shore. The facilities are also pretty good. If the fishing was a little more consistent out of the Port of Rochester my boat would be there for the season given it's a 5 minute drive from my house.
Security there is great! Locked gates and cameras on your boat at all times. There are some very friendly people who dock there, and you have access to a lot of great bars and restaurants. The con is they are an expensive marina all around. Nothing is really cheap there.
I looked at an 11 Meter at Barrett's last Summer. It was a gorgeous boat, but a little more than we could afford.

He helped me a lot with instructions on boat repairs and is considered one of the best about any boat.He always has time to talk to you about anything with boats.
The police keep their boat their also .Barretts rents by the slip for the water and is about $960 cheaper than shumway for my boat and for winter storage they are $800 cheaper. I don't want to leave and I will probably regret it but I may leave it at barretts for the winter and bring it to rochester in may when the canal opens up.
Now Shumway just told me if I don't bring my boat down and store it for the winter I may not get a slip in the spring.

...and Welcome to Shumway. They have the power of "location". They will tell you that slips are not available unless you store with them. All I hear is how great the owner of Barrett's is and how helpful they are. Shumway is just the opposite. Granted, its a beautiful marina in a good location, but they will push you for every last penny.
Why would you keep it at Barretts for the winter? Seems to be a big hassle for the cheaper part of the season. There are cheaper locations for storage. Sodus would be more convenient and cheaper than Rochester.

Re: Anybody ever store or dock their boat at Shumway Marina
sodus is just as far as seneca for my son and daughter. There is another marina called voyager which is on the same side as shumway and has spots right on the river south of the bridge and they all have sheds for each dock. They are roughly the same. winter storage is cheaper but they have haul out charges and charge $2 ft for the lift to bring your boat to where it will be stored.$10 ft to haul it out of the water That means $360 for my boat-so everything is the same money wise. If I don't have a cradle then there is a charge for renting one. Barretts price on gas was $4.55 for clean gas-no ethonal in it. The more I look into it the more I don't want to move but you know how it is. the wife and kids (both are married and working) think that we can go to sodus if we want or irondequoit or port bay or anywhere on lake ontario if we stay at shumway. At barretts we only fished seneca lake but there is a little ride to cayuga lake or onieda lake.
I'm not worried about the boat making the journey but just worried about the weather which lake ontario can get nasty at times and in a hurry.

there was a 1984 for sale but sold quick-I looked at it but the lady accepted a deposit through her broker but was trying to sell it on her own so I didn't but it even though she though it was legal for her to sell it.She called me about three different times saying she got rid of the broker. the only thing on the boat that didn't work was the air conditioner.

As long as you don't need to be anywhere in a hurry, you can outlast most bad weather in Oswego. Oswego is a pretty nice port. If the waves are bad, stay and wait it out. We came back from Oswego last month and ran into some rough weather. We could have snuck into Sodus, but the 10.8 Meter enjoyed the rough waters and told me to stay out.dfg4240 wrote:sodus is just as far as seneca for my son and daughter. Re: Anybody ever store or dock their boat at Shumway Marina
I didn't see that one but there is a Trojan three boats down from me-1988 for sale but it is in the 50K range. I looked around down here in Rochester at a few marina's and there is nothing like Barretts down here. Southpoint in Irondequoit bay does not have the new docks in yet but said they will be ready by next season . My boat there would be around $2400 for the season but they don't winterize themselves. The boats are stored there but they sub it out to someone who pulls your boat out with a trailer.
They have no indoor storage or repair place that I can see-no parts store or mechanics to work on the boat.
I decided to leave my boat at Barretts for the winter and bring it to rochester in May-This way I will have a chance to look around.
