engine removal

Post by davidsmith »

We used a yard forklift with long forks to remove and install 440`s with trans still attached in a F36 through the sliding glass door opening without removing any glass. Worked perfectly, just had to rig really tight to engines.

I didn't wnat to post this but since your still looking for ideas - here goes. When I did this on my f-32- I was able to get each engine out of the boat and onto the ground without a boom truck or crane. My boat was on the hard and surrounded by other boats so I had little room and no choice. All in all, it went extremely smoothly and it was just me and my 11 year old son so it's doable- but a lot of guys thought I was crazy.

It just takes planning and a lot of thought. The tools I used were a 1 ton chain fall engine hoist ( about $75). Some wood, a good movers dolley (4 wheeled) and lastly I made a little rolling hoist hanger/trolley that had a hook on the bottom for the chainfall hoist and some rollers on the top that rolled on (2) 2x10's nailed together.

Inside the boat, I unhooked the engines and removed the exhaust manifolds (necessary to clear the salon doors). Then built some A frames to hold the double 2 x 10's over and across both engines. Using the hoist/trolley on the overhead 2x10 beam, I lifted one engine up over the salon floor and then using the hoists trolley, pushed the engine to the mid point of the boat (in-line with the door) by rolling the trolley accross the beam. I then laid 2 other 2x10's flat on the floor under the engine (covering the engine room hole) and they extended all the way out to the cockpit. I used a movers dolley on top of the 2x10's and lowered the engine onto the dolley- then pushed everything out on the track to the cockpit.

Out in the cockpit, I setup another double 2x10 beam that rested on pads setup on the flybridge floor, and that beam extened about 7 feet past the transom. it was suppoted at that end by another heavy duty A frame... a really TALL one. I again used the chainfall hoist and trolley to raise the engine over the cockpit sides, rolled the trolley and engine on the beam until it cleared the side of the boat and lowered it down to the ground onto the movers dolley.

All this was a pain and was not especially cheap. if I could have hired a boom truck, I would have... but becuase of where my boat was, it was the only way to swap the engines over the winter. If you try something like this, please get some help. I'm an engineer and was able to calculate and design the supports to deal with the laods involved.. and the loads and mass is enough to do some serious bodily and/or structural harm. Don't attempt this half heartedly but understand- most situations are surmountable with enough planning.

thanks jav, it's funny you mentioned that i was thinking along the same lines but was affraid it would not work. I was thinking of setting up the 2x10's doubled thru the side windows and then 2x10's attached going to the back and attached to A frame a couple feet behind the boat. i couldnt come up with a way to slide the chain hoist down the 2x10's. i am going to check the rental place down here to see if i can rent a yard fork lift if not i would be interested in setting this up, so if you can give some plans on how to build it i would appreciate it.
