overheated 360 wont start

1973 f32 360 engines. ran the severn river fine on way back engine overheated. shut off at 220 got hot.. wont start back up after cool down. someone tild me they have heat sensor that protects engine from blowing up .. HELP...

Won't start as in won't turn over, or turns over but won't fire? Did the engine quit on its own when the temp spiked, or did you shut it down?

Is the engine turning over? If it does, go back to basics; are you getting a spark? At that temp, you'll also melt any wire insulation that was resting on the manifolds or block. This may be preventing the ignition circuit from working.

turns over but doesnt fire.. shut down on its own.. no noises no leaking fluids of any type.. anti freeze still green and full.. i might have suvked up sand ..it was really low.. how to back flush engine maybe sand inside help !!

On the front of the intake on your 360 may be two temp senders at least this is the way mine is---- one of Them is the temp sender for the gauges and the other will be a high temp I believe alarm sender that has the temp stamped on it,mine is 225----- when it hits that number it completes the circuit--not sure what happens after that ,whether it is just an alarm or shuts engine off I don't know---- can't find an engine wiring diagram for this-----just an idea--- Mike

If it still turns over it is not seized, so it is fuel or spark. If it quit on its own because of temp, likely something like what Big D says... perhaps insulation on some wire may have melted enough to ground or short something out, or fry something in the process. Do the basic spark / fuel test, and if no spark start looking at any wiring that is close to the engine for signs of damage.
