first long run port engine quit!

Ran 30 miles, anchored for 2 hours and beat it back in 3-5' waves. Port engine sputtered and quit. Ran for awhile on starboard engine and it started only just to quit. Gas was down to 1/4 tank (i had a 1\2 which was half new gas and half from who knows when). Got it to gas dock on 1 engine (thank you God for the learning expierience). Filled up both tanks. Started engine and it ran perfect only to die after a minute.
Fuel filters are new. Water in gas? Junk?
These are Mercruisers in a 78 F32.

I would look at your "new" fuel filters , I would suspect they have trash or water in them . The big seas stirred up the tanks I would guess

Thanks Capts...think you are right. Filter is locked on, bent 2 wrenches already. Vapor locked? It aint moving!

Update: bent 2 oil filter wrenches trying to get it off. Even brought some muscle down and neither one of them could budge it either. I have chain strap that I am going to try next but part of me wants the mechanic who put this on to take it off! We did start the engine and it ran fine for 5 minutes before I shut it off but still think it best to replace the filter while I can (if I can).

Make sure you put oil on the filter seal .

My fuel filters are the canister type and not the spin-off type. Are you sure that yours doesnt have a 7/32 bolt on the bottom?

Mine has an orange painted filter bowl that contains fram cartridge filters. It comes apart with a bolt in center of top. Not a spin on. Remove bolt and bottom comes off. Would like to replace with spin ons and will, but for now works fine with new filters. Not sure if yours are like mine or not, kinda sounds like it.

If you still have a fuel starvation problem after you change the filters, be sure to look at the anti-syphon valves. They are a simple check valve and are located at the pick up tube on top of the fuel tank, the copper fuel line is connected to them. Since they are located before the filter in the fuel system, the spring inside them can get clogged with debris from the inside the tank resulting in fuel a restriction.

They look like a standard fitting with NPT at one end and a flare at the other but they do have a ball, spring & retainer inside. They can be removed, disassembled, cleaned and replaced fairly easily.

Thanks! I ended up getting off the fuel filter with a chain/strap wrench and lots of prayer. Fun thing to do on a hot morning in July! But it was a beautiful Door County day for a cruise afterwards.
