For what it's worth;
My friend's Crusaders had the same issue with his port engine. After inspecting the fuel system and changing all filters twice, I discovered his compression low in a couple of cylinders. After pulling the rockers, I could see that an intake valve had sucked up into the valve seat, (a quick tell- tale, is to straight edge the valve stem tops, with rockers off, they should all be aligned in height, none lower or higher) the companion exhaust valve was sticking in the valve guide.
After pulling the head, we found # 4 cylinder intake valve tuliped.
Although it seem to run fine at idle and rev under a no-load condition.
Basics, basics, basics...an 8 cylinder engine with weak cylinders will not giddy-up on 7 cylinders...or less.
Hopefully your problem is electrical or fuel. Good luck.
