No it is the rudder blade where it attaches to the shaft. All movement is between the shaft and the rudder blade. Can't figure out how the blade attaches to the shaft. Probably a bronze pin through the shaft. Movement is not a lot and will probably be fine for some time.

Shaft does not have any side to side or up-down movement inside the shaft bearing and rotates freely.

Here is the F36 rudder drawing:


The rudder is held in vertically by the Roll Pin through the Shaft Collar.

The rudder is held rotationally by the Tiller Arm's KEY to the shaft, and its clamping effect with the bolt.

From memory, my F32 is the same. I'll walk out and take a look in a bit ...

I need to know how the rudder blade is actually attached to the shaft. The diagram does not show that. Only shows how the shaft attaches to the steering mechanism.

The shaft is held in by the roll pin at the top.
Basically to remove the shaft, you would drive out the roll pin, loosen the set screw and remove collar ring, loosen the shaft packing nut and the rudder will pull out from the bottom. Of course if the shaft were bent, this might be a bit more difficult...

Just re-read. Sorry, you want to know how the blade is attached to the shaft....

The rudders on my F-36 have a through bolt holding the tiller arm to the shaft...no keyway, no evidence of ever having a key.

Whoa..just re-read your post and realized where your play is. You are right the rudder blade is held to the shaft by a bronze rivet. If it's worn and loose, drill it out and install the next size larger. Make sure the new hole is a drive fit for the new rivet.

What I wish I knew was how the blade of the rudder is attached to the shaft. I don't care anything about what is inside the boat. The problem is between the blade itself and the shaft. All this is below the hull.

I had to re-read his post to understand.

It is riveted on the shaft somehow. Not sure if it is two rivets or one.

She's floating now so it will have to wait until Fall of this year.
