This is NOT boat related, but is interesting.

Hundreds of miles from home in a strange town on a deadline.

going through a construction site.

car in front of me hits one of those caution barriers with the flashing yellow light

it goes FLYING and a piece goes under my Durango.

I get to my destination and there is GASOLINE running out of the tank.

I deliver the deadline item on time then drive to a grocery store for a bar of soap.

rubbing the soap on the tank sealed the leak temporarially, until it could get fixed properly.

Lucky for me it did not rain!

Just got a UPS package Tue. from Beacon Marine

Well I thought that I might as well start getting the supplies ready for the round up in Solomons. #1) Gas #2) BEER #3)Food #4)Stickers (Sea Ray, Carver, Trojan) #5) 24hr Security Guard (For MY Boat) Anything else anyone can think of? All suggestions greatfully accepted. AND NO I won't be a referee! (Just an instigater)

I've been trying to think of the most rigged up thing I've done to keep my boat going, the only thing I can come up with is a zip tie on the trans linkage because the E-clip broke. But I was leaving my dock when it broke.
And you've gone to far with it when you want to put UPS stickers on her ! I'll have to get all Redneck up in here.....

We had a weld break on our 42 deadrise rudder arm . we hung a 5 gal bucket off one corner and held the rudder straight with a pair of channel locks and rode the 5-7fts seas and 25mph wind towarads the inlet were a freind came out and guided us in

2 stories. The 2nd led to me finding our Trojan. I think I've told them before, but here goes...

1) 78 Chris Craft Catalina. About 7 miles from port out with my brother and his kids. My brother took the wheel and I went up to sit on the bow with my bride. I dozed off, and woke up listing to the old 283s under quite a load. I looked over the edged and noticed the water was a good foot higher on sides! Crap, we were sinking. Quickly raced aft and jumped into the cockpit. He had her up to about 3/4 throttle and we were barely moving. I was about to get your attention he says... Anyway, I open the hatch and there is steam everywhere. One of the exhaust manifolds had cracked, go hot, and burnt the exhaust hose off! The motor had been pumping water in, and the had dropped to the bottom of the hull providing another 3" hole for water to come in. A coat hanger to hold up the exhaust line and once I was certain there were no other holes, we shut down that engine. Took about 3 hrs to go 7mi back to port buy by the time we came in, their was less than 4" of water in the center walkway in the cabin. The next week, I got 4 new exhaust logs and hoses, and 2 bigger bildge pumps (decided I was not doing that again). I've not napped since and let someone else take the wheel.

2) a few years later, I'm aboug 80 yds behind a barge/tow in a narrow spot in the Mississippi just below St Paul MN. The tow caught a submerged log, and it shot like a torpedo back at us. It hit the bottom about 8" ahead of the starboard drive shaft through-hull. BANG! and it rocked the boat over 2' to port! My fater was sitting on a deck chair and fell out. RPMs went past redline instantly and I shut it down. On the deck around the engine compartments, there were little orange blocks of rubber everywhere. I opened the hatch to see a 6" hole in the bottom. Like Paul did, I stuffed a life jacket in the hole and a beach towel around the edges, and I use a telescoping dock pole to hold in all in place. The orange rubber was an exploded driveshaft coupler! It blew so hard it lifed up the hatch cover and shot pieces on the deck. There were bolt chunks driven into the bottom of the hatch!. We limped back on one and had her pulled in the morning. In the weeks the followed, I was traveling around boat salvage yards hunting for used running gear to fix up the Chris, and found the Trojan sitting in a yard. I fixed the Chris, but after I found the Trojan, the Chris had to go.
