Yes it is!
Not to hijack this thread, but I thought you all might enjoy this (on a cool winter day)
I went to my wife's Christmas party the other day.
She is a professor at local Trident Technical College,
heading up the Mechanical Engineering Technology department.
Anyway - they have a beautiful cut-away model of a Cummins L!0-290
(Cummins Marine is located in Charleston, SC) that the students built
with the Cummin's staff. I always admire it when I go by their offices.
This 10Liter, inline 6 monster produced 290h with 1,0000 ft lbs torque or more.

That is very interesting Rossjo. It even says that it is a working model.
I thought I would post a pic of how I get in and out of the boat.
As with all of the boats that I have owned, I work on them all winter and have yet to find a shrink wrap zipper door that woud hold up.
My Father fixed that problem for me.
You guys are right as I am fortunate to have a boat that with some work, I can make enough room to do a project like this and to have engines that can be repaired in the field.

Jerry,
You've got that big boat in your back yard? Did you haul it or pay someone to do it?

Rossjo,
No, It is up in the corner of our yard at the boat club that I belong to.
I knew what I was going to do this winter so we did not block it in which means at least I have easy access.
I am lucky as It is between where I live and where I work so I am always driving by it..... Although I have been known to make up all kinds of excuses just to drive by the water.

Nice - hows it coming?
How do you plan to make the bore/sleeve fit better?

You mentioned the sound of those 6-71's....
Your absolutely right, when you here those babies idling, even if its too far away to recognize the boat- any person can point that particular sound out of those DD's. I heard it when I was a kid back in the early 80's and all the way in the Navy around those smaller utility boats. No other Diesel can duplicate that awesome sound out those 2 stroke diesels. Another cool thing is the way the hunt a little bit.
Love that sound.......Got to love those Detroit Diesels

I've noticed the hunting too. What causes that? Is it normal for those?

Not uncommon cold , its the governor that causes it , adjustment can help sometimes . should not do it warm.

They make the sleeves in .001 oversize increments so you hone the block just enough to clean it up and then measure, measure again and when you are all done you measure it one more time.
Originally, Detroit wanted about .000-.0025 between the block and the sleeve but I am being told that it should be a bit tighter than .0025 being a dry sleeve and that tighter fit will drastically cut down on the high-low pressure areas. We will be shooting for the low end of that range.
There is a buffer screw on the governor that will help somewhat with the hunting, but if it hunts that much that you have to use it something is wrong or you need a new mechanic.
I have found that if you adjust the injector heights and rack correctly, it will barely hunt at all.
This weekend we got the lifting frame together and the chain falls in place so hopefully next weekend the engine will be airborn. I will update with some pics tonight.
During this week my goal is to get that head out of the boat and to the machine shop. It sounds much easier than it actually is.
We made a shim out of wood to bolt under the head as it cannot lay flat or you will damage the valve train. We bolted it to the head using large carrige bolts through two of the head bolt holes. That way we can lay it flat and the wooden shim will give enough clearance as to not put any weight on the cam followers.
The head was than wrapped in plastic than in some old towels and tied up.
I have to be very careful as I need to get up the steps and I just had new carpeting put down and this head seems to hold a lot of oil. I have protection on the carpet but I would rather be over cautious.
