If its in the filler thats not the tank , just the filler rusting.

making a point of why I don't have galvanized tanks nothing to do with corn gas . If it still had gasers it would most likely still have galvanized tanks.

Mine is the orig tank. 35 year old galzanized steel. Looked in it this winter and WOWZER its loaded with rust. Now I am looking for a fuel tank.

FYI ALUMINUM TANKS

Pulled single 242 gal tank for inspection during the repower.

found some corrosion in the rear - bottom of the tank.

Not all the way through, but in process.

most likely as a result of the rear bilge pump being NFG for a period of time, allowing the rear/bottom of the tank to sit in salt water

Tank was replaced.

The bottom 50% of the new tank was treated with a primer and then coated with a special coating (black, I can't remember it's name)

Just an FYI for you ALUMINUM guys that think you may be immune.

P.S. When I bought the boat from the original owner (she was 18 years old and had spent her first 18 years in th ewater 100%) I found that the entire factory bonding wire system had been cut or removed. Do not know if this could have contributed to the corrosion problem

original galvanized tanks. alway fresh water,don't think it's ever seen corn gas ( could be wrong but I've been very carefull) no signs of corrosion on the OUTSIDE. will replace if/ when I repower.with the price of gas the way it is....and the way it keeps going up...will likely sell
( insert almost give away), before ever repower.will likely eventually go to single engine diesel trawler...

Yeah, I hear ya guys..... spending $8K to $10K to replace the tanks on a '76 boat may seem like a bit of lunacy..... and my husband and I have really been debating if this is the right thing.... but here's the deal:
We're starting our 3rd summer with this boat.... it took us a long time to find it, and i still look through the listings..... but haven't found anything else in our price range that gives us what we have with this boat. Anything newer is out of our price range, and anything older with replaced fuel tanks is also out of our price range.

The space, size, layout is the best one we've seen for us, and it will be a boat we have for the next 10 years..at least...the boat we'll start our family on.
Everything else about the boat is structurally sound, and the 318 Chryslers are like Mr. Potato Heads: one part fails, take it off and put another one on.

We like the way it runs, we're comfortable with the fuel efficiency.... and the fact is we bought the boat cheap knowing that we'd have to replace the fuel tanks.

I asked my dad if he thought it was worth it.
He was very quick to say "NO".... then after a dramatic pause, he said, "but was it worth $10K to replace the head gaskets on our boat last month? No." But he did it anyway....

....Yup..... we're gonna do it.

there's a USCG # for it and I don't have it in my netbook but I'll be on the boat tomorrow and post it. What ever you do DON'T use auto hose or plan rubber gas hose corn gas will eat it from the inside out and screw up your carb's and gas pumps.

USCG Type A1 , Never use B1 on a inboard.
