Gas versus Diesel. (At least here in Europe)

From time to time this question comes up. Gas or Diesel. I have made a calculation for the "problem". I had a boat with around 700 Hp totally, twin gas engines. To drive this boat WOT did cost me the merely lump of 3900 Norwegian Kroner pro hour, or around $670 US Dollar. Each hour!!!
On one hour the boat travelled 26 Natical Miles. Which will give a price of $ 25,76 USDollar.....or about 40 times more than my aircraft. The price of Gas here in Europe is today 14,20 NKR (krone), or $ 2,53 USDollar / Liter, or $ 9,60 USDollar / Gallon. The diesel costs around the half price of gas, or 7,88 NOK. On my "new" diesels the fuel consumption will be around 12 Gallon / hour WOT. Or 45 litre. The speed?? Almost the same. Then it´s simple to figure out: If you use your boats for 100 hours a year, there will be a lot of dollars or krones to be saved. Or...???

I am sure I have missed this! but why would you convert to lesser power? I can understand doing it with diesel but not for gas to gas

Paul: The Navistar Diesels works OK on 45 Litre / 12 Gallon. But even if you put on a 5 Gallon the result is pro diesel.... And offcourse the price for a gallon.

PK - our government has it so screwed up here that our diesel costs MORe than gasoline here. But I'll never have gasser inboards ... but not fuel savings on price/gallon - but much better mileage ... and more reliable ... and safer.

Gettaway - engines look nice - When I saw you post, I assumed you were going with those diesels you found last fall - no deal? The L-6 gassers will be ok, but not very fast. Why not just rebuild you V-8's?

Paul: I mean the WOT will make the engines go on 12 Gal. @ 3400Rpm. I am not sure how high Rpm I can take out, but there is a tag on the engine that says 3400. But even if you put on 5 Gal. extras because the injectors are a bit worn out, the diesel pump is a bit "low" on the injection point, even then you will have a positive result. Especially here in Norway. By the way: we celebrated the Norwegian National Day today, May the 17th. In a cold and rainy day. But there was a celebration...and tomorrow I´ll be back in the engine room in my Trojan.

PK I think you missing the point 12 Gal per engine ( 24 gal per hour for the boat ) at WOT , thats sounds about right .

Not sure what the 5 gal thing you talking about .

Gotta ask.....with that much less power what do you gain? You will have to run those 6's hard to get the same performance, if you even can???................John

Paul: As soon I´ve got her splahed I will give you the right numbers. Or at least as right as possible. I will use a "flowmeter" on the fuelline, and multiply it with two (one for each engine).

Ross: Thanks. I will put out some pictures from the celebration on "The Norwegian Trojan"-string. But Ross; I had myself three shots Aquavits. That stuff must be good for a "Ancor shot"...? The one you take when finished the lowering of the ancor in the evening.

PK I don't need thouse number was just wondering if your figures where for 1 engine , as I have 300hp diesels I know the fuel burn is well over 12 GPH per engine at WOT
