So I went down to the boat today and visually inspected/verified that the new oil pump does not have the adjustment screw in the relief valve. Definitely keeping it that way. I haven't found anything regarding higher pressure during break in but I'm still researching that in the Buick and Pontiac forums I have some experience with.

all of this scares me, i want to replace the oil pump in my new to me long block chy 318. i will be shaking as i pull the old out and put the new, not rebuilt i hope in.

IMO, it's always best to run and test a rebuild on the floor before being installed. It would have been easier to deal with a possible rebuild issue that way before going through all the trouble of installing then possibly removing again to remedy. Once you're happy that all is running well on the floor, and reading are normal, then install.
She was a 1969 36 ft wooden beauty with big blue 440s that we'll miss forever.
