Curious, IMO a quench/squish design piston is the best way to go for a marine app that's constantly under load and on the edge of detonation....a flat top or full dish will work, but if I were rebuilding a marine engine, I'd quench it.....my two cents.

Try Marinepowerusa.com
I bought two 6.0 with transmissions and saved a ton.
They even did custom white paint for me.

6.0's let us know your burn rate, heard they could be gas hogs in 36' plus boats.

I have heard the same. I understand that the mapping and control systems have been re calibrated for the base power plant and consumption has been reduced...but I am sure it is still not gonna be pretty at WOT.
I worked very closely with Cameron Gilly at MarinePowerusa.com and they intend to map my engines to the application.
You must also know that we intend to use the boat as a coastal cruiser and will most often be at a very slow cruise or maybe better described fast idle. I put the 6.0 in for the HP if we need it and re-sale.

I have a 6.0 vortex in one of my trucks, the fuel burn in my truck is obscene! 128 liters gets me just over 400 kms which is 32 liters per hundred kms or 42 dollars for 100 kms....translated to english its 42 dollars per 60 miles! I cringe at what that would be in a boat...

I have a 6.0 in an 07 vette and it sips the fuel.

I am sure that I will be burning quite a bit a cruise and even more at WOT.

We're planning on fast idle speed cruising so I am not really concerned with fuel burn.

When I did my rebuild last year I looked at a lot of options. checked on all the long block remans....for me on the west coast i was concerned about buying anything from the east coast...sure they all have a warranties but you have to haul the boat, pull the motor and send it back...I decided to have a local reputable marina do the rebuild and own the warranty.....cost more but for me the piece of mind was worth the extra cost..........my 2 cents......John

32pacemaker wrote:vortec big advantages are in the heads with high flow ports and fast burn combustion chambers. you can use the vortec heads on an old block best used with flat top pistons and ends up at about 9.4:1 compression make sure you use an external bypass for the coolant because the older heads use a hole drilled in the head for coolant bypass. limit your ign timing to 28 degrees max, and use a rail style rocker arm stock or better yet a roller tip from comp cams
