Just to look at rotation to where the impeller is squished by the cam. When the cam releases the impeller blades, water is pulled in and pushed around to other side where it is forced out as the impeller blades are squishing against the cam and ergo the water goes out that side. 8)

Chrysler TSB below regarding change of pumps used.

Notice the single pocket was for freshwater cooling. Chrysler made a change to using single pocket with circulation pump after this change was issued. Before the dual pocket was used for raw water without circulating pump and the single pocket used on freshwater only. Page 15 is the old way. Notice they also recomment strainer, I am sure that is due to the transmission oil cooler being impassable to debris.
