Capt Ross.

I run 1.5 gears with 17x14 3 blades. I cruise at 20 knots (3300 rpm) and top out at 24 knots.

You run it up to 4,000 then?

engines are rated for 3800 RPM and I'm 50 over on one and 25 under on the other with a full load.

David - Might want to avoid the first engine in the series, the TAMD41A, which smoked a lot.

TAMD41A Production Year 1986 - 1989 (smoky start)
TAMD41B Production Year 1989 - 1993 (new piston/heads solved smokey startup)

TAMD41H-A Production Year 1994 - 1998

Anyone else have advice for David, who is making his decision today?

If you would Be happy with a 16-17 knot cruse and a a 21-22 knot top end . Then I would go for it . ( info from boatdiesel calculator )

keep in mind what JAV had to say . Do some reading on boat diesel .

As far as Smokey starts some times that just the nature of the beast with some diesels . ( more so in cooler temps ) .


and remember there are added costs . like fuel tanks if your are galvanized the will heed to be replaced .

True - Detroits tend to smoke a bit when cold. Not too bothersome.

I've only been in one boat that smoked me out ... a 200x 32 Luhrs with twin 502's - top speed was about 18-19knots and the 502s were running full steam and the CO was so bad you couldn't ride in the cockpit (without the chance of a long,long nap).

i LOVE the sound and smell of a detroit diesel engine!! that rumble, that blue smoke, the feel of power under your feet. yeah baby, DD all the way!!!
when i was a kid, a 57 cc connie was right beside us at capital yacht club. the one thing i remember the most is the stainless steel semi circular exhaust ports and that rumble coming from the 3 water line port holes for the engine room. water would come out the side and the exhaust ports out back. i could listen to those babies all day long.

So will some cummins and cats and the list goes on . Mine do smoke a little cold even on warm days , I don't have air heaters that some do ( they help a lot) . Also I have lower compression Due to the saltwater aftercoolers and larger turbo , lower compression = more smoke cold
Just a trade off high output diesels

The new elctronic engineshowever bur real clean , Love to have a set of QSBs

16.5:1 here - and only have smoke when its cold out - then clears up after engines warm.

David - not sure I'd let the smoke bother you, if speed range is acceptable. Once you have them, you'll love them ... always start ... no ignition system ... no carbs ... no gas to ignite in boat ... VERY fuel efficient at slow speeds.

I agree . By the way Mine are 15.3 to 1 , not that you see many turbo Cummins B engines but they are in around 17.5 to 1 .

anyway a liltle smoke is normal and tells your frends you got diesels :D
