Here's some specs on 15w-40 diesel engine oil:

15W40 MOBIL DELVAC 1300 SUPER Diesel Oil conventional, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4/SM, SL = 73,300 psi
zinc = 1297 ppm
phos = 1944 ppm
moly = 46 ppm

15W40 CHEVRON DELO 400LE Diesel Oil, conventional, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CH-4, CF-4,CF/SM, = 73,520 psi
zinc = 1519 ppm
phos = 1139 ppm
moly = 80 ppm

15W40 “NEW” SHELL ROTELLA T Diesel Oil conventional, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CH-4, CF-4,CF/SM = 72,022 psi
zinc = 1454 ppm
phos = 1062 ppm
moly = 0 ppm

15W40 “OLD” SHELL ROTELLA T Diesel Oil conventional, API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4,CG-4,CF-4,CF,SL, SJ, SH = 71,214 psi
zinc = 1171 ppm
phos = 1186 ppm
moly = 0 ppm
Yes it’s true, the old Rotella actually has LESS zinc than the new Rotella.

Shell Rotella 10W-30 has/had 1200 ppm of Zinc. If the new Shell Rotella has more Zinc for the 15W-40 then the 10W-30 probably has more Zinc as well but I can't say for certain. Shell Rotella is a diesel oil that is also rated for gasoline, so it can have more Zinc than an oil that is rated for gasoline only.

Just for giggles, I just sent an email to Crusader customer service to get their .02 worth. After all, the did make and warranty those 454 beasts back in the day. I will post their answer as soon as I receive it.

Where did you get your info ? I was able to get specs from shell but that was it nothing I could on line

Lawman - where did you see this? I've been using Rotella 15W40 in (4) diesels, (1) 454 (10w40 in the other Suburban 454) and my 350 Corvette, but would love more zinc ...

Did my research a couple of years ago, I basically did a Google search and thats what I found. But it is inconclusive, some sites state that the "newer" Rotella has less zinc (900ppm) than the old (1200ppm) and some say the opposite?? At the time I did my research I compared Delvac, Rotella and Delo and Delvac was on top with almost 1300ppm. ???

At the end of oct 2013 Rottela 15w-40 had 1200 ppm zinc , This was directly from shell . I have the email . I will find out if the have changed since . tomorrow I will be buying my spring supply 12 gallons

Those are good levels. I think I'm splitting hairs now anything over a 1000ppm I think we're ok.

If you plow through his several thousand word preamble you find a rating of 126 different oils. He is adamant that the key to longer engine / cam life is not simply higher zinc levels. (and his testing rates the Rotellas at #91 out of the 126 for "new" and #95 for "old".) I certainly have no way to know if he is a legitimate expert - he talks a good game - but if he is to be believed there may be better answers than the Rotella.

He talks the , talk for sure , But his testing is very limited mainly film strength there is a lot more to it and if he so sure of all this why not put his real name on the report , not something rat

Heck I just shoved Delo to both engines and added the Lucus zinc heavy break in oil. Use Delo in my truck. IMO I think any of the HD oils will be good.

Delo is good I just prefer Rotella I would have no issue using most name brands . As far as adding "Lucus zinc heavy break in oil" if your breaking in a cam that's fine but not needed other wise . And could down grade the oil , if your are to believe the report by 740rat or what ever his name is . I believe use a good oil and leave the snake oil and miracle in a can stuff back at the store Yet I added stuff to my fuel

Delo, Delvac or Rotella, all i'm sure would be just fine as far as zinc levels. My question is why is diesel oil so much cheaper??? I can go to Wally World and get a gallon of Delvac for $12 and as far as gas treatment I now use BIOBOR EB (for gas). BIOBOR JF for Diesel. The Military has been using this stuff for 40 years which is good enough for me.

I don't know for sure but I always assumed it was because of volume and competition. Diesel trucks use a lot of oil (large engines and lots of miles), so price is important in their buying decision. The little fish (us) can take advantage of the pressure put on the manufacturers by the big fish (commercial trucks).
