It has an "over temp" light which I've never seen lit up. So, you're probably right that it's adjusting the input charge but it's never reached the critical one which I think shuts down charging all together.

I believe they are counting the ground. Pretty sure the 4 AWG will do 20 ft (9' pos + 9' neg + safety) at a 3% drop with a safety margin at 40 amps full output to one leg if it needed it. 4 AWG will handle 50 amps at 20' hense the 50 amp fuse.

One should not mount a charger or anything susceptible to corrosion directly above a battery/s. I've seen first hand several times what that does after a while when conditions are right. It takes time but the charger's lifespan will be diminished if it doesn't catch fire first.

As pointed out in past threads when upgrading chargers to higher output models, not only must one take into consideration changing the current wiring, one must also consider the size of the bank being charged. Most manufacturers will note this minimum requirement in their literature as noted in the manual above in section 4.3.3

It usually takes a fair bit to activate that like a shorted cell or other condition that would cause the battery to generate a lot of heat while charging.
