Thanks Paul.
Follow up on engine fit for repower:
1) Tranny.
Which trans are you using? Torque/HP rating? Are you using "in-line" trans (ie velvet drive). This would tilt engine (raise front & spark arrestor some amount) to match shaft angle, vs a "off-set" (ie ZF) which would allow a level engine mount perhaps saving height.
2) Shaft.
What diam are you running? 1"? I recently replaced mine (along with strut), stayed 1" on shaft, resisting changing diam of shaft thiniking this would require change strut & stuffing. How costly was Aquamet 19 and what was rating gain over existing?
3) Down angle.
Do you know shaft down angle on your '78? Assume '82 is same.
4) Coupling.
Taperlock, can you send a resource/link?
Most cruising is displacement speed with ~20% plane/cruise, but if I have a boat load of family/gear and need to get home ahead of tornado/storm, want confidence in drive train at plane or WOT while loaded. Besides normal gear/load, I have added ~1.5k lbs in custom hard top, batts, H/C water tankage. My bias is build robustly for safety, but use gently hoping for long service life.
