I treated the wood with " smiths cpes clear penetrating epoxy sealer" this stuff is great. It helps prevent rot and provides and very good base for the varnish to go on. For anyone that has not used this stuff it goes on like water and just soaks into the wood. I put on three coats of a high build varnish after this which was I believe "flagship 2015". I did the railings in epiphanes high gloss. The railing had six coats and the sun damaged the finish this summer. I am going to strip them and use the other varnish on it. It is the same varnish I used on the back deck which is two seasons old and still looks like new.
